This variation of the Awareness Examen practice, founded by St. Ignatius Loyola, brings an awareness to how sacred action shows up through the events of the book.

Awareness Examen-

Follow the 6 step instructions here online or print the bookmark instructions below to have on hand while reading together.

  1. Prepare

Choose a “Preparation for Caregiver/Parent” and a “Preparation Together” practice. View instructions on “Prepare” page above.

  2. Read

Read the book once. Take a minute to go over the main elements of the story. Then choose one character and reread the story thinking about that character’s perspective.

  3. Mindful Moment

Take a few breaths, a moment to sit, maybe some extra snuggles or rocking in the rocking chair. Think about the character and notice what emotions arise.

  4. Share

If comfortable, share any thoughts or emotions that came up while thinking about the chosen character and their experience in the story. What do our emotions tell us about their experience and their choices in the book? Did we notice any blessings, grace, or gratitude?

  5. Offer

If it feels comfortable, offer the character a blessing, help, advice, gratitude, anything that might bring benefit for the future. Offer some kindness to any mistakes made or lessons to be learned. Also view “Offer” page.

  6. Rest

Let go of the practice in a way that feels right to each child in the moment. View “Rest” page.

Adaptations

You can reread the story through another character’s lens and see how the different characters might see each other.

You have completed a sacred reading practice!
